DIALYSIS UNIT: DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE

INTRODUCTION:

Dialysis is a process of removing waste and excess water from the blood which is used primarily to provide an artificial replacement for lost kidney function in people with renal failure. It may be used for those with an acute disturbance in kidney function (Acute Kidney Injury, previously Acute Kidney Failure) or progressive but chronically worsening kidney function (Chronic Kidney Disease stage-V, previously Chronic Renal Failure or End Stage Renal disease). Chronic Kidney Disease stage - V may develop over months or years in contrast to Acute Kidney Injury which is not usually reversible and dialysis is a “holding measure” until Renal transplant can be performed or sometimes as the only supportive measure in those for whom a transplant would be inappropriate. There are three primary types of Dialysis - Haemodialysis, Peritoneal Dialysis and Haemofiltration. Amongst these, only haemodialysis is currently performed at Dialysis Unit Civil Hospital Aizawl.

HISTORY:

With one Centri System-2 Haemodialyis machine and 3 staff strenth (2 Staff Nurse and 1 Laboratory Technician), Haemodialysis was started for the first time in Mizoram on 28th February, 2001 at Civil Hospital Aizawl under the Department of Medicine. Centri Sytem-3 was subsequently installed and both the machines were functioning very well till June 2002 when both the machines were damaged beyond repair. The unit was restored again only on 24th April, 2006 with one new haemodialysis machine which was added with one machine each in 2008 and 2010 respectively, currently with 3 functioning HD machine.

ACTIVITIES:

Since the beginning, 490 patients have had undergone Haemodialyis at our unit out of which 138 were female. Altogether a total of 5205 sessions were performed as on 31st October 2012

INFRASTRUCTURE:

Place: Situated on ground floor of Block E Building. All patients (both inpatients and outpatients) are taken up on Day care basis as there is no separate ward for those requiring haemodialyis. Those needing admission were admitted under Medicine Department.
