DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY

The Beginning:

It is not known when Pathology alias Laboratory  was established at Civil Hospital, available source reported that in the year 1958 there was rudimentary side laboratory for blood, urine and stool examination located at the basement of main hospital building, below the Medical Officer’s chamber. During those days, no trained technician was available, laboratory was looked after by one of the sweeper named Pu Munga in the morning and his routine sweeper work in the afternoon.

Moving forward :

More than a decade it was presumed that the laboratory was run by an untrained personnel, the first trained Laboratory Technician, joined Civil Hospital Aizawl in March 1973. The first blood transfusion in Mizoram was conducted in June 1973.

Quantum jump :

In September 1978, the first Mizo B Sc (MLT) graduate from PGI, joined the laboratory, and under the leadership of Dr PSKP Raju, Pathologist, along with the support form Dr Arora, Director of Health Services, the laboratory achieved several landmarks in the history of laboratory services in Mizoram. Microbiology - like culture and sensitivity was started in 1980, histopathology (biopsy) was initiated in 1983 and the first semi-automated biochemistry analyzer was installed in 1988. The laboratory could not accommodated the department anymore, and was then shifted to the present Laboratory Building (Block-B) in the year 1989.

Room No 210 :

The world discovered a kind of new, strange, deadly and rapidly spreading disease called AIDS in 1980, then the diagnostic test known as ELISA in 1983. The health official in Mizoram felt the needs of screening the disease amongst the high risk group like IDUs. In collaborating with NICED, Calcutta during October 1990 several blood samples were collected and screen by ELISA test in Room no 210. The first batch of HIV sero-positive cases were detected in this same room. This room become the first HIV Surveillance Center as well as Counseling Center in the state. (now utilized for Cytopathology & FNAC room)

Medical Doctors in Laboratory Services :

The first Medical Officer for laboratory Dr KK Ghosh look after the laboratory for one year during 1976-1977 and then left for post graduation, soon after in the year 1979 February Dr PSKP Raju MBBS with DCP in Pathology joined the department, he nourished and upgrade the department, under  his leadership and co-ordinated support from the staff, the present Laboratory services came into the present stage. He work in the laboratory till his retirement in 2000.

The first MD Pathology Dr John Zohmingthanga joined the dept in April 1991, thereby strengthening the existing lab services and several improvement in Histopathology and Cytopathology was also observed.   In 1994 January another MD Pathologist graduated from AIIMS, Dr Eric Zomawia joined the department, followed by the first lady pathologist Dr Lalchhanhimi MD graduated from PGI Chandigarh in August 1996; resulting in great amount of improvement in qualitative and quantitatively, the dept then become well established in technical manpower.

The staff of this department was also instrumental in establishing RP&NTI (RIPANS) MLT course, and teaching its MLT students during the initial stage. Till date  all the MLT students undergo practical training in this department.

The department also imparts training to junior Medical Officers in the form of House Officers, more than twenty doctors already undergone Pathology training in this department. All of them hold very important responsibilities in their respective posting place.

i.

Population Based Cancer Registry (PBCR) : This program was set up under National Cancer Registry Program (NCRP) taken up by Indian Council of Medical Research, Government of India. The project was started at Aizawl in January 2003. Its main aim and objective is to generating reliable data on cancer, monitor the magnitude and patterns of cancer in the state, provide data base for  appropriate strategies on cancer control in the state.

ii.

Tobacco & Pesticides Related Cancer in Mizoram : This research project was  initiated in 2005 and continued up to 2009.  Its main aim to  find out the effect of tobacco and pesticide on the development of its related cancers in the state.
